About the Presenters

Bob VandePol, President, Crisis Care Network

Bob VandePol, MSW, serves as President of Crisis Care Network, the nation’s largest provider of Critical Incident Response Services to the workplace. He consults with corporations, insurers, EAPs, and behavioral health professionals regarding how to manage the behavioral risks inherent in workplace tragedies. Active as a keynote speaker,Mr. VandePol has published and been quoted in many business and clinical journals, co-authored two chapters in books addressing workplace security and response to tragedy, and was featured in several video training series, including Critical Incident Response and Advancing Best Practices: Critical Incident Response for the Workplace. He managed CCN’s Command Center in Manhattan after the 2001 terrorist attacks and led numerous leadership summits following Hurricane Katrina and the Virginia Tech tragedy regarding how employers could lead organizational recovery during crises. Mr. VandePol is a member of the Employee Assistance Professional Association’s Workplace Disaster Preparedness Taskforce.

Rich Paul, Vice President -Health and Performace Solutions, ValueOptions

Rich Paul serves as Vice President of Health and Performance Solutions within the commercial division of ValueOptions. Mr. Paul is responsible for the strategic direction of EAP services company-wide and the implementation of best practice initiatives as well as product development. He has over 15 years experience within the EAP and behavioral health field.

Mr. Paul is President of the Employee Assistance Society of North America (EASNA), active in the Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA) and has authored over two dozen articles and is a frequent speaker on a variety of issues that impact upon productivity and organizational performance. He is also co-author of a book titled Workplace Disaster: Preparedness, Response and Management. He obtained his Master of Social Work from the University of Illinois in Chicago,
with a concentration in Occupational Social Work and Organizational Development services and is a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP).

About the Program

A one-hour teleconference will explore best practices and a partnership model required to effectively respond to crisis and tragedy in the workplace. This discussion will highlight the model of response to the Virginia Tech incident.

The following topics will be covered:

  • The unique challenges presented – campus-based, high media-visibility and scrutiny, immense and multiple circles of impact, death of young people
  • Phase-sensitive response -- (identify mass disaster phases and how addressed, multi-component response (use of telephonic and on-site consultation with leadership, boots-on-the-ground care, webinar/video/audio/print resources, positioning VT leadership favorably, participation in ritual events, EAP counseling resources, specific needs of various populations, balance of acknowledging the trauma and transitioning to a future orientation (ACT).
  • Partnership issues – the value of trusting partnership
  • “We Will Prevail” -- a wonderful theme for resiliency
