About the Presenter
Facilitator – Pamela A. Wyss, LICSW, CEAP
Pamela A. Wyss, LICSW, CEAP is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Washington State, a Certified Employee Assistance Professional and a DOT qualified Substance Abuse Professional. Pam received her Master of Social Work degree in 1986 from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After graduation she worked in substance abuse treatment before becoming an employee assistance professional, a career which now spans 20 years in clinical and administrative positions in both internal and external EAPs.
Pam went through her own gender change during the late 1990’s while manager of the King County EAP in Seattle, Washington where she continues to work as EAP Coordinator/Senior Human Resource Analyst. Since her transition, Pam has provided professional consultation and assistance for workplace gender change to managers, employee assistance and human resource representatives, the transitioning employee and the employee’s co-workers both within and outside of King County. She has also presented to various Human Resource and Employee Assistance groups nationally and written an article for the Journal of Employee Assistance on this issue.
A seasoned presenter, Pam blends humorous, sometimes poignant examples of hers and others’ experiences with the objective realities of the workplace to illuminate the many challenges that arise when an employee begins the amazing process of changing gender at work.
About the Program
Designed especially for managers, supervisors, human resource, employee assistance and mental health professionals, this course examines what it means to be transgendered and explains the impact of gender change with particular emphasis on how it reverberates within the workplace. It identifies the potential resolutions to some of the greatest challenges it creates there, touches on current trends in the law and how transgendered individuals are increasingly protected, and provides an extensive list of professional resources for future reference when this issue surfaces where you or someone you know works.
At the end of this one hour workshop participants will be able to
- distinguish between transgender, transsexual, and transvestite; sexual orientation and gender identity; sex and gender
- articulate several key implications of being transgendered and how changing or not changing gender may impact the employee’s life and work performance
- identify, prevent and resolve the most common problems that arise in the workplace when an employee announces his or her plan to change gender
- give management and all employees important tips and recommendations on how to be supportive during an employee’s transition process
- locate additional resources for professional help on this challenging issue
