Meeting the Psychological Needs of First Responders in a Crisis


About the Presenters

Stephanie W. Nissen, LMHC, LPC

Stephanie W. Nissen is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in North Carolina and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of Florida.  She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Miami in 1992 and completed her Master of Science Degree at Nova Southeastern University in 1995. Following her practicum training at Miami Mental Health Center, Inc., she obtained clinical experience at the Community Health of South Dade, Inc.


In 1999 Stephanie Nissen joined the Psychological Services Section of the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) and served there until her relocation out of state in 2005. Her duties included providing psychotherapy to police officers and their families. She responded to departmental critical incidents such as police involved shootings, in custody deaths and car accidents. She was an instructor for the MDPD’s Training Bureau and focused on in-service and academy courses requiring a knowledge of law enforcement and psychology. She developed and managed the Substance Abuse Intervention Program that served the 5000 employees of MDPD. In addition, she was a consultant to the Special Response Team Police Negotiators and took part in review boards particular to police trainees experiencing difficulty in the academy.


Stephanie Nissen moved to North Carolina and in 2006 and accepted a position with Magellan Health Services where she is a District EAP Consultant for the United States Postal Service. She oversees the Employee Assistance Program for half of the postal workers and their families in the state of North Carolina and is a consultant to District management and union officials.

Lastly, Ms. Nissen maintains a private practice limited to first responders. She holds a certification as a Criminal Justice Instructor in the State of North Carolina and teaches leadership skills to police supervisors through Central Piedmont Community College, Public Safety Training Program.  Her counseling office is located in Graham, NC.

 

About the Program

First responders suffer the same illnesses as the rest of the population yet with an increase in prevalence in anxiety and panic disorders, PTSD, substance abuse disorders, and marital difficulties. This one-hour teleconference will provide information about on-the-job psychological services for this subgroup of the workforce and will cover the following topics, among others:

  • Nuances of policy psychology
  • In-house versus out-of-house services
  • Debriefing versus therapy
  • Dual relationships and other special considerations
  • Psychological pathology on-the-job and fitness for duty

Participants will have a chance to ask questions.
