About the Presenters
Facilitators – Dr. Melissa Pence
Dr. Pence joined Hampton Roads Neuropsychology, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, as a post-doctoral resident in Clinical Neuropsychology. She received her license to practice Clinical Psychology in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2006. Dr. Pence received her M.A. in Clinical Psychology in 2002 and her Doctorate in 2005, both from Regent University, an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited program. She completed her pre-doctoral internship training at Spring Grove Hospital Center and the Baltimore Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, an APA accredited program in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Pence’s clinical practice includes both assessment and treatment of those either diagnosed with, or having a suspected neurological impairment or psychiatric concerns. She evaluates and treats patients from young adults to senior citizens. Her clinical interests are in psychological and neuropsychological assessment, as well as crisis management. She has acted as a consultant for Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center since 2003 conducting crisis assessments in local emergency rooms and primary care clinics. Dr. Pence provides Neuropsychology services at Virginia Beach Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center on the Head and Heart unit, a 34-bed, locked long-term care neurobehavioral facility, including weekly rounds, behavioral management and assessment services. She currently has affiliate medical staff privileges at Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center, Lake Taylor Hospital, and Virginia Beach Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Dr. Pence strives to contribute to her community by conducting training sessions and lectures regarding in suicide assessment and prevention to various audiences, such as the City of Virginia Beach Mental Health staff, physicians at Virginia Beach General hospital, and doctoral students at Regent University. She has also provided several other lectures and presentations in various areas of behavioral medicine and Neuropsychology. She has a special interest in the therapeutic nature of companion animals, and has been a registered Pet Partner with her golden retriever.
About the Program
Assessment and management of risk for suicide are vitally important tasks for mental health professionals. This forum will discuss the epidemiology of suicide, methodology for risk assessment, an overview of prevention strategies, and medical legal concerns.
Participants will have a chance to ask questions.
